Despite all the criticism that England have faced this summer, they are in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. For the fourth consecutive tournament under Gareth Southgate, they have made it to the last eight, and now they will face Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday afternoon.

It’s without a doubt going to be the toughest test for the Three Lions so far, and if their performances don’t improve, this could be the end of the road. Below you can find my England vs Switzerland prediction, with betting tips and team news.

England vs Switzerland Betting Tips

  • Switzerland to win @ 11/4
  • Switzerland -2 @ 18/1

Team News

Southgate clearly has some big decisions to make, but it doesn’t feel like he will make wholesale changes, which could be to the detriment of his side. Ezri Konsa is the most likely candidate to replace the suspended Marc Guehi, while Kieran Trippier is likely to be fit to start at left-back once more. A switch to three at the back would be unexpected but could work, with Bukayo Saka a potential option to fill that left wing-back role. Trent Alexander-Arnold could then play on the right, but it seems unlikely that the England manager will make such drastic changes at this stage.

Meanwhile, we know what we are going to get with Switzerland, as they are far more settled. They will play a 3-4-3, with Ruben Vargas, Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye a dangerous front three. Granit Xhaka will pull the strings in midfield, while Manuel Akanji has been phenomenal at the heart of defence.

England Predicted XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Konsa, Trippier; Mainoo, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane

Switzerland Predicted XI: Sommer; Schär, Akanji, Rodríguez; Widmer, Freuler, Xhaka, Aebischer; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas

England vs Switzerland Odds

England are the favourites for this one, priced at 6/5 to win on Saturday, while Switzerland are available to win the game in 90 minutes at 11/4. A draw can be backed at 2/1, over 2.5 goals is 6/4 and BTTS is 11/10.

Switzerland to win @ 11/4

Perhaps this is just overwhelming pessimism from my perspective, but I simply cannot see how England can win this game. Switzerland have shown at this tournament that they are everything that England aren’t. They have a system that works, everyone knows their jobs and they are a unit.

Southgate meanwhile has a collection of individuals who cannot seem to function together, and never seem more than a moment away from a crisis. They played well at the start of the first game against Serbia, but since then it has been almost unwatchable. The Three Lions should already be out of this tournament, and only Bellingham’s brilliance saved them against Slovakia.

Unless Southgate changes things drastically, I cannot see anything other than a comfortable Switzerland win here.

Switzerland -2 @ 18/1

We are getting terrific value for this particular selection. Before the Slovakia game I was relatively happy with England’s defending. They had struggled up front but Trippier had been a solid left-back and Marc Guehi has taken to the task at hand well.

However, Guehi is now suspended so changes will have to be made at the back, and they haven’t played a team as good as Switzerland yet. I think the Swiss could swarm all over this England defence and if they get their press right, the pressure could prove to be too much for Southgate’s side. A 3-0 scoreline (20/1) isn’t out of the question in my eyes.
