Cape Derby: Almost a Century of Heritage

The Cape Derby is a very historic event that dates back to 1925 when DESERT BORN, a filly, became the first winner of the Western Province Derby over 2400m. We have had almost century go by and this historic race continues to attract attention from every corner of the globe. There are 10 races on the card with race 1 jumping at 12:05 CAT. Kenilworth is the venue for this years edition and there is a buzz around this years runners.

Here are some races you can add to your bet slip this Saturday...

JET MASTER STAKES (Race 5)

The runner to keep a close eye on in this race is ROYAL AUSSIE. This runner is lining up in favourable conditions and has a lot in his locker to secure a good run on Saturday afternoon. Especially if we see the level we saw from ROYAL AUSSIE at the Grade 1 L'Ormarins Kings Plate over the same course and distance. A few other runners that have been pegged to impress in this race are GOLD POKER GAME, QUASIFORSURE and FUTURE PRINCE. This race will jump at 14:25 on Saturday afternoon make sure not to miss it.

The odds on this race will be boosted between 13:30 to 14:00 on the 24th of February 2024. 

PRIX DU CAP (Race 6)

Race 6 on the race card is the Pix Du Cap which jumps at 15:00 and has a field of grade 3 fillies and mares, running over a distance of 1400m. It is a competitive field that has OCTOBER MORN and RIPPLE EFFECT as the stand out runners on the card considering recent form, weight turn arounds and expected conditions on the day. A strong case can be made for MISS MARGUERITE, SHANTASTIC, GOLDEN HOSTESS, MRS GERIATRIX and ASIYE PHAMBILI. This field promises to give punters everywhere a headache with a lot of capable runners and the mystique of a major race day in Kenilworth. This promises to be the race that gets us all off our seats and screaming our runners name.

DIADEM STAKES (Race 7)

Race 7 on the race card, the Diadem Stakes will give some experienced punters a feeling of Deja Vu. That is because this race may feel like a repeat of the Cape Flying Championship where a few of the runners carded in the final field raced over 1000m on Met day. 10 runners have been carded including, THUNDERSTRUCK, who finished ahead of BEREAVE, RIO QUERARI, and SURJAY in the Cape Flying Championship. Sean Tarry will be hoping to see THUNDERSTRUCK, do one better than what he did in the Cape Flying Championship and win the race but only time will tell.

CAPE DERBY (Race 8)

The headline race, is race 8 - the Cape Derby. Previously won by SEE IT AGAIN, POMP AND POWER, LINE BACKER and GOLDEN DUCAT. This is the race that people will be tuning in to watch. GREEN WITH ENVY, HARAJUKU, and ORIENTAL CHARM, were all very impressive in the Politician Stakes Derby over 1800m. These runners are expected to set the pace on Saturday afternoon, However, BEACH BOMB, RAPIDASH and HLUHLUWE are horses you do not want to over look when placing your bet on this Saturday's Cape Derby.

The odds on this race will be boosted between 11:00 to 12:00 on the 24th of February 2024.
