About Race Day

The race day is scheduled to take place on Saturday the 25th of January 2025. Gates will open at 10am and the race course will close its gates at 10pm. The races will be held at Kenilworth Race Course.

History on the race

The Cape Town Met is considered one of the three main feature races in South Africa's racing Calendar, alongside the Durban July and the Summer Cup.

Formerly known as the Metropolitan Mile, It is a Grade 1 race run under weight for age condition at Kenilworth. This is Cape Racings premier race. The Met is at sea level giving the best Race Horse an equal opportunity at glory. Originally the race was ran over a mile hence the former name (Metropolitan Mile). In 1915 the race had to be extended to 1800m and finally set to 2000m in 1948, which remains the distance as we approach this year's race on the 25th of January 2025. The Met was originally ran in November before it moved to January in 1947.

Most Notable Runners

One name that will forever be associated to this iconic race is Horse Chestnut. A race horse that is considered by many to be the best race horse in South Africa. Racing in the Oppenheimer's colours and trained by Mike de Kock, Horse Chestnut would become South Africa's first Triple Crown winner and the first three-year-old in 54 years to win The Met. These accomplishments earned Horse Chestnut the titles of Equus Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt in 1999.

The Met's roll of honour includes the names of many of South Africa's top race horses like Ariel, Pocket Power, Wolf Power, Model Man, Empress Club, London News and Horse Chestnut.
