Group E will feature five teams due to the Eritrean National Football Federation's withdrawal from the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary competition. This group now has Morocco, Zambia, Congo, Tanzania and Niger remaining as participants

The Second Round of qualifiers will pit the best four runners in two one-off semi-finals, subsequently followed by a final. The winner of which will participate in the FIFA Play-off Tournament.

Best finish by an African Side

The Atlas Lions became the first African side to reach the semifinals for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. They did so after an impressive run in the tournament that began with them topping a group, that had Croatia, Belgium and Canada. The tournament started with a draw against Croatia, followed by a 2-0 win against Belgium and 2-1 win against Canada. The difficult fixtures continued in the knock out phases where they knocked out the 2010 winners Spain. they followed this up with a win against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. That game would see them edge the result by a single goal. This result would set up a show down the Semi Finals against holding champions France. Despite their best efforts, they fell short against the French and lost by two goals to nil. The Third place play off would go the way of Croatia who collected the bronze medal which meant that the African's came home fourth place finishers in the tournament.
