Germany vs Greece Prediction: Away side can impress against Euro 2024 hosts
Germany are now just a week away from launching their Euro 2024 campaign on home soil, and excitement is building around the continent for this summer’s tournament. They face Greece in their final warm-up game, before the real action begins against Scotland next Friday night.
There’s so much to be excited about for the summer, and Germany will want to make sure they deliver as the tournament hosts. But first they must respond to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Ukraine with a win against Greece. Below you can find my Germany vs Greece prediction.
Team News
Waldemar Anton and Pascal Gross both started for Germany in the stalemate with Ukraine, with Robin Koch, Thomas Muller and Chris Fuhrich all coming off the bench. In this match I expect Julian Nagelsmann to choose the same XI he is hoping to start against Scotland, so Jamal Musiala, Ilkay Gundogan and Florian Wirtz are likely to stay in the team.
This is Greece’s first match since they lost that Euro 2024 play-off final to Georgia on penalties. That defeat will sting, but they have to move forward. Konstantinos Mavropanos of West Ham, and Dimitris Giannoulis, formerly of Norwich, should both start in defence, while Christos Tzolis is flying, having scored 24 goals on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Germany are the favourites for this game, priced at 7/25 for the win, while Greece can be backed at 8/1. A draw can be backed at 22/5, BTTS is 91/100 and over 2.5 goals is 13/25.
Under 2.5 goals @ 10/7
Germany looked impressive in March, but struggled to make an impact against Ukraine with a relatively strong squad. They need a big win to restore confidence, but they are coming up against a difficult Greece side - more on that shortly.
After that stalemate, I think the value lies in backing under 2.5 goals. Clearly Germany are not firing on all cylinders right now, and Greece have been stubborn of late. They drew 0-0 with Georgia before agonisingly losing on penalties, and have kept three clean sheets in their last four games. This is likely to be a low-scoring affair.
Greece +2 handicap @ 91/100
I think Greece have been underrated in this market, and I think they have proven over the past 12 months that they are a competitive side in Europe. They were unfortunate to be placed in a qualification group with France and the Netherlands for Euro 2024, but they still picked up 13 points, even drawing with the 2018 world champions.
They didn’t play well in that play-off final, but the penalty shootout could have gone either way, and they could be in this summer’s tournament. Instead they will have to focus on this game with Germany, and I think they will be able to put in a decent showing, as they did against France and the Netherlands in qualifying. Even with 10-men, they only lost 1-0 to France in Paris, while they lost by the same scoreline at home to the Netherlands. I can envisage something similar unfolding here.
