Germany vs Ukraine Prediction: Euro 2024 hosts can win big
Germany have just two matches remaining before they get Euro 2024 underway by hosting Scotland in Munich. Before then, they face Ukraine at the Max-Morlock-Stadion in Nuremberg, and Julian Nagelsmann will hope to use this game to try and finalise his preferred starting XI, but he has already made the big decisions, naming just 27 players in his provisional squad.
With four goalkeepers included, one of that quartet will be dropped, with Manuel Neuer a surprise inclusion having not played for Germany since 2022. They face Greece later in the week, but first up comes a test against Ukraine, who will fancy their chances of qualifying from a relatively open Group E. Kai Havertz is set to lead the line again for Germany here, having moved up the pitch into a central role. At the start of Nagelsmann’s tenure, he was deployed as a left-back, but that experiment backfired and now Germany are having far more success with him as a number nine.
Toni Kross is also on his farewell tour from football and could start in midfield, while Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz will provide the youthful flair moving forward. This is an exciting Germany team and one that could go far on home soil.
Meanwhile Ukraine now have Real Madrid’s talented goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in between the sticks, with Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, Chelsea’s Mykailho Mudryk and Everton’s Vitaly Mykolenko all familiar names to fans of the Premier League.
Germany are the big favourites for this match, priced at 41/100, with Ukraine 29/5 to win this game. A draw can be backed at 7/2, over 2.5 goals is 51/100 and BTTS is 69/100.
Germany to win both halves @ 41/20
Germany have really turned a corner in 2024, with statement wins against both France and the Netherlands. After their poor 2023, it seems Nagelsmann has finally got them on track at the right time as we approach Euro 2024, and a couple more mood-boosting wins in these two friendlies should set them up well to go far this summer.
They should have more than enough to beat Ukraine, who have a decent squad but ultimately face a tough away test here against a side that are finding their feet. Nagelsmann has now got the right balance and system, and Germany with the attacking threats they possess could be dangerous. The price of 41/20 for them to win both halves on home soil appeals to me more than the other markets available.
Germany -1 handicap @ 99/100
A safer pick, but one along the same lines is Germany to win with a -1 handicap. All signs point to this being a relatively comfortable evening for the hosts and they’ve progressed massively since back-to-back defeats to Austria and Turkey.
Meanwhile, Ukraine have won their last two games, but in Euro qualifying, up against the major nations in England and Italy, they failed to beat them at home, and lost both ties on the road. With Germany now one of the elite nations again, I’m backing them to win big in Nuremberg.
