Scotland vs Hungary Prediction: Can Scotland make it through?
Scotland have never made it out of the group stage of any major tournaments. They’ve been to eight World Cups and this is their fourth European Championships, and Steve Clarke’s now know that only three points will suffice.
Confidence was repaired after that 1-1 draw with Switzerland, and now Scotland know that they have to beat Hungary, or they will be heading home. Hungary meanwhile, also have to win this game to stand any chance of qualifying, having already been beaten by Switzerland and Germany. Below you can find my Scotland vs Hungary prediction.
Team News
Scotland are still going to be without Ryan Porteous after his straight red card against Germany, but Grant Hanley did well as his replacement against Switzerland. The big issue comes as Kieran Tierney’s was stretched off with a serious injury, and it looks as if his tournament is over. Scott McKenna replaced him, and will likely start in his absence.
Meanwhile, Hungary have to provide more of an attacking threat in their final group game. Barnabas Varga has scored their only goal of the tournament so far but Dominik Szoboszlai hasn’t yet produced in midfield. They will be expecting to win this one however, against weaker opposition, but it may be too little too late.
Scotland predicted line-up: Gunn; Hendry, Hanley, McKenna; Ralston, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson; McTominay, Adams, McGinn
Hungary predicted line-up: Gulácsi; Fiola, Orbán, Dárdai; Bolla, Ádám Nagy, Schäfer, Kerkez; Sallai, Szoboszlai, Varga
Scotland are priced at 8/5 to win this game, while Hungary can be backed at 3/2. A draw is available at 11/4, over 2.5 goals is 7/10 and BTTS is 61/100.
Scotland to win @ 8/5
Scotland are the underdogs here, but I just think the emotion of this game will benefit them. If they win they will probably make it into the last 16, and create history in the process, while if Hungary, they will probably still exit the competition. That desire and will to win, could make the difference given there is not a huge amount of quality on either side.
Hungary were the dark horses heading into Euro 2024, but just like Turkey at Euro 2020, they could lose all three group matches. With Scott McTominay getting further forward and the Tartan Army behind them, Scotland can win this game and create history.
Under 2.5 goals @ 28/25
This is likely to be a tense affair, and in truth, there is not an awful lot of attacking quality on show. Both of these teams have only managed to score once so far and although neither side has kept a clean sheet yet, I think we could see this game decided by just one or two goals.
I’m backing Scotland to win and under 2.5 goals, which would be a result that would go down in the annals of Scottish football. Clarke’s men now know exactly what they have to do heading into this final group game. There are no more excuses. It’s time for them to deliver.
